Silence is a discipline.

I am a relationally-oriented to person, and it is hard for me not to greet someone when they enter a room! It just feels awkward not to go through with the general social politenesses of “How are you?” and “My, the rain sure is coming down out there!”

But every once in a while, I’m learning to practice silence.

The first time I observed someone participating in a day of silence was last year, on the World Race. My teammate, Bee, subdued her extroverted self to learn to better listen to the Lord and to others around her.

Her silence had a profound impact on our squad. Bee – normally the life of the party – chose to engage in this humble act. The change in her was so evident that before long, many other squad mates were joining in the practice.

Once every month or so, I’ve begun to incorporate a day of silence into the week.

It reminds me that it’s okay to say nothing at all.
It reminds me that I don’t need to fill in the spaces.
It reminds me of that which really is important to communicate.

It reminds me that nonverbal signals are powerful.

It shows me the power of presence: I can still be near someone, embrace them and pray for them (even without words!)… and alter the course of our day!

So, what do you say (or choose not to say)… want to give it a try?

…if you do, let me know what you find out. 🙂
